If you are a worship leader looking for some great new worship songs to add to your set list, here are my church’s 18 fall favorites this year.
As a worship leader in a small church, I’m regularly on the hunt for new worship songs that will work for a smaller band in an intergenerational, contemporary context.
Besides publishing my Top 3 New Worship Songs Each Month, a few worship leaders have asked me to publish a list of my entire “current favorites” file. So, I’m happy to oblige.
Because I regularly rotate worship songs, as new ones appear, older songs get retired.
I try to keep the list of my current favorites to less than 30 songs. Each quarter you will find new ones in the mix.
Worship Ministry: Small Churches vs. Big Churches
All songs that work in big churches with big bands do not work well for the small church!
For songs to work in my small church, they need to meet a few criteria.
- Lyrics that relate to multiple generations: old and young
- Songs that don’t rely on a huge band, or even always a full drum set
- A singable range: Not crazy high or jumping between octaves
- Not too many songs or too many new songs
- A mix of tempos

And if you are regularly on the hunt for new songs like I am, check back every 30 days for my Top New Worship Songs. Each month I feature one fast, one medium, and one slow-tempo song. Check out the Top New Worship Songs For September 2019.
But for now, here’s a quick post listing our church’s favorite worship songs for the fall of 2019.

There are a lot of songs on this list that we’ve never done and a few that we’ve done in the past. A few that I’d add would be Reckless Love (I know there’s a lot of controversy around this song), Oceans, Revelation Song, Good Good Father, and At the Cross (Love Ran Red).
We are short on vocals and without a guitar right now, just keys, bass, and drums. But praying that God reveals a guitarist and some more vocalists soon.
Thanks so much for this list. Isn’t it funny how God provides? Not the first time you’ve provided what I needed!
Glad it’s helpful! And thanks for your suggestions too. (although I’ve never heard a controversy around Reckless Love – so I’ll have to look that up!) I think the more songs we all share with each other, the more successful we will be at finding the ones that work well for our unique congregations and worship teams.
WOW! There is quite the emotion around the word “reckless” huh? I looked it up Pam. Hmmm…. I think it is beautiful, heartfelt song that speaks to the current generation’s need of relationship, of being pursued by a loving God.
I know, I agree. At first, I didn’t care for it, but the younger band members really wanted to do it. So we worked on it awhile and it just grew on me. I think our pastor is okay with it.
I attend a church that has written some really powerful songs. You should check them out. Go to your music source and search Highlands Worship. (Church of the Highlands) Our main church is located at Grants Mill in Birmingham, Alabama. Our Worship Team just put out a live album. You can also view the live recording on video. Look for the title “Jesus You Alone.” You all named amazing songs.
Awesome. I will check them out. Always looking for great songs! Thanks for connecting here.
