Guest Blog Guidelines
Audience:
All posts should be written to meet the needs of small church ministry.
Content Categories:
Guest posts should fall into a specific ministry area, such as: Women, Men, Children, Youth, Special Needs, Creative Arts, Outreach, Missions, Prayer, Church Communication/Media, Administration, Leadership, All-Church Events, and Volunteers.
We look for step-by-step solutions for events, activities, volunteer development, and more. Please familiarize yourself with the content on SCM before submitting. We do not publish duplicate topics.
Length:
Articles generally should fall between 1000-2000 words in length.
Author:
We look for writers who are actively involved in small church ministry and write from experience. Occasionally we accept posts from those in larger churches who have specific knowledge and love for small churches. By submitting a post, you confirm you have read and agree with our Statement of Faith, Ministry Philosophies, and Core Beliefs.
Formatting & Editing:
-
- Headings & Subheadings: We add & edit these. This keeps your content easy to read.
-
- Lists & Bullet Points: We love these. People skim articles more than they read. Bullet points make this easy to find quick value.
-
- Natural, Conversational Tone: This is our brand. We share content that is well-founded, reliable, and trustworthy, but not robotic.
-
- Sentences & Paragraphs: If a single sentence exceeds 2 lines, it’s too long. We live in an “instant” world, so please don’t make people work too hard. We also love small paragraphs! (3-5 sentences is perfect!)
-
- Include the word “small church”: Please include the phrases “small church” or “small churches” or “small church ministry” throughout your article. If that doesn’t fit your article, then it’s probably not right for our site.
-
- Active Voice: Use active voice to keep your post engaging. If you don’t know the difference between active and passive, please look it up! E.g. Susan married Bob. (YES) Susan and Bob were married. (NO)
-
- Spell Check: Please run your post through spell check before you submit.
-
- Positive & Hopeful: We maintain a friendly, forward-thinking culture. In addressing challenges, don’t use sarcasm or fatalism.
-
- Think “How-To” not “Look What I Did”: Instead of telling them how your event went (first person), give them clear steps for their own success (second person.) Your article should be more like a How-To than a testimony.
-
- Original Content: If your post has appeared anywhere else on the web, we can’t publish it on our blog.
-
- No Images: To maintain consistent branding and legalities, we don’t publish outside images. If an illustration is necessary for your post, email hello@smallchurchministry.com to inquire.
