Music and songs are a powerful and Biblical part of our Christian worship. The Old and New Testaments exhort and even command us to sing praises to our King.

“Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; Talk of all His wondrous works!” (1 Chronicles 16:19).

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16).

As Christians, we use music and songs to help prepare our hearts for worship, focus our adoration and praise on Jesus, encourage and admonish each other, and teach theology. We also demonstrate our thankfulness for the many blessings God has bestowed by singing.

On Mother’s Day, we thank God for the gift of our moms. It is also appropriate that we thank and encourage the women who have poured so much love and care into our lives. Here are a few songs to consider as you prepare for your small church’s Mother’s Day celebration.

Impactful Worship Songs For Mother’s Day

1. Unsung Hero by for KING + COUNTRY

As I write this article, I see that the movie Unsung Hero is impacting many around the globe. The story celebrates the faith, strength, and courage of the mother of For KING + COUNTRY duo Luke and Joel Smallbone. This song voices a beautiful tribute to the many ways mothers enrich our lives.

A Few Lyrics:

For all the times I fell down, you showed me how to stand
And when we crossed the ocean, you were my safe place to land
Been on a thousand stages, but when it’s all said and done
I hope I make you proud of, of the man that I’ve become.

2. The Blessing by Kari Jobe

This song is rooted in the Blessing recorded in Numbers 6:24-26 that God commanded Aaron to speak over the Israelites. This song offers a blessing in song form to the mothers, their children, and their children’s children. What a special addition to a service planned to honor and encourage mothers!

A Few Lyrics:

May His favor be upon you and a thousand generations, And your family and your children and their children and their children.

3. You Say by Lauren Daigle

This song will speak encouragement into the lives of mothers who may be in a place of struggle as a parent. The lyrics remind us all that no matter what, we are loved, strengthened, and held by our heavenly Father.

A Few Lyrics:

You say I am loved when I can’t feel a thing
You say I am strong when I think I am weak
And you say I am held when I am falling short

4. Canvas and Clay by Pat Barrett

This song reminds us that we were all designed and created by a loving Father! This song will speak to mothers and mothers-to-be.

A Few Lyrics:

In my mother’s womb
You formed me with Your hands.
Known and loved by You
Before I took a breath.

5. Build My Life by Brett Younker

This song celebrates the Christian mothers who build their lives on the Rock of Jesus and teach their children to do the same! It will be an opportunity to remind us all that Christian mothers serve the One who is worthy of all our praise as they raise their children to honor the Lord.

A Few Lyrics:

Holy there is no one like You
There is none beside You
Open up my eyes in wonder
And show me who You are
And fill me with Your heart
And lead me in Your love
To those around me

6. That’s My King by CeCe Winans

This song is a joyous declaration of the honor and glory we give Jesus. What a wonderful reminder that, as Christian mothers, we serve our risen King in all we do! This song encourages mothers that they are never alone. He is our Shepherd, Protector, Rock, Anchor, and Defender.

A Few Lyrics:

My King
That’s my God
That’s my Shepherd
My protector
That’s my King
That’s my Rock
That’s my Anchor
My Defender
Who we talkin’ about?
That’s my King

7. Strong by Anne Wilson

Strong captures many of the emotions and ups and downs of being a mother! As children, we tend to think our mother is so very strong. Unfortunately, mothers often feel anything but strong! This song will acknowledge the hardships mothers face and remind them that God is able and willing to meet them right where they are. When they are tired, when they don’t know what to do, when the day is just hard, when they put on a brave face for their children, mothers need the Lord! Adding this song to your small church Mother’s Day service may be a wonderful conversation starter for ways to come alongside mothers and support them in their journey.

A Few Lyrics:

Strong, try to make ’em all think I’m strong
Yeah the face I keep putting on says I ain’t tired
But these tear stained eyes ain’t lying
‘Cause hard, nobody told me life could be so hard
A weary soul with a worn out heart that’s barely beating
But every time I get that feeling
I hit my knees with my hands held high

Acknowledging The Complexity Of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day can be a time of grieving for some. Some have never been a mother, some have lost their mother, and some have lost children. Count Your Blessings by J. Oatman, Jr. is a well-loved hymn that can encourage us all to remember to count our blessings no matter what circumstances we find ourselves in. The words of the hymn are poignant no matter what stage of life we find ourselves in.

Worship songs and hymns are Biblically based and lead us to worship God. We also are reminded to be thankful for all the blessings in our lives. Mother’s Day is an opportunity to lead our congregations in celebrating moms and thanking our Heavenly Father for His wonderful provision in our lives. Our songs or music styles may differ, but our obedience to Biblical exhortations to sing praises to our King is the same.
