In the quiet, rural heart of southern Illinois, where community and faith intertwine seamlessly, one woman stands out for her unwavering dedication and compassionate leadership. Barbara Atchinson, a devoted member of Calvary United Church, has been recognized as the “Outstanding Small Church Ministry Volunteer in the Area of Women’s Ministry.” This honor reflects not only her tireless efforts but also the profound impact she has had on the lives of the women in her church and beyond.

A Life Rooted in Faith

Barbara’s journey of faith began early. Raised in church, she has always cherished the sense of belonging and purpose that comes from being part of a faith community. Her love for the church naturally led her to serve, first as a Sunday School teacher and children’s church worker in her younger years. Alongside her husband, she has also been instrumental in spearheading the van ministry at Calvary United Church, ensuring that transportation is never a barrier for those wishing to worship and engage in fellowship.

Discovering Her Purpose

John Maxwell famously said, “There are two important days in our lives. The first is the day you are born, the other is when we figure out why.” For Barbara, this realization came later in life. “I feel as though my purpose in life is to encourage others,” she shares. “It was not something that I knew when I was young, and it almost seems unfortunate to wait until I am old to realize what my purpose is. I think life experiences brought it out of me.”

Barbara’s deep compassion for women, particularly those navigating personal struggles, was forged in the crucible of her own life experiences. Emerging from a dark season, she found herself drawn to ministering to women, offering them encouragement, hope, and a sense of belonging.

Leading With Love And Purpose

In 2021, Barbara was named the Ladies’ Ministry Leader at Calvary United Church, a role she embraced with enthusiasm and a servant’s heart. Her primary focus has been on building meaningful relationships. “I think my main role as a women’s ministry leader is to build relationships to assure that each woman is seen, known, loved, and accepted,” she explains. “I strive to recognize the strengths of each lady and to encourage them to grow in their strength zone.”

Under her leadership, the women’s ministry has flourished. Monthly ladies’ events and prayer gatherings provide a space for connection and spiritual growth. Additionally, a quarterly breakfast at a local restaurant fosters fellowship in a relaxed setting. However, what touches Barbara the most is the genuine love and acceptance she receives from the women she serves. “The most touching and memorable thing for me as a women’s ministry leader is the realization that the ladies in my group truly love me and completely accept me for who I am.”

The Power Of Community

Barbara credits much of her growth and inspiration to her involvement in Creative Solutions for Small Church, a group she joined in January 2021. This community has been a source of knowledge, encouragement, and innovation for her ministry. “We are not meant to do life alone. One is too small a number for greatness!” she says passionately. Through this group, she has gained invaluable insights and practical techniques to strengthen her walk with Jesus and improve her ministry efforts.

The online conferences offered by Small Church Ministry have also played a significant role in her development. She particularly appreciates Laurie’s podcast, which presents thought-provoking topics and actionable solutions. “Laurie’s podcast is so valuable. She shares thought-provoking subjects and gives doable steps to solutions,” Barbara shares. The leadership bundles available through Small Church Ministry have also been a tremendous help, making her role as a ministry leader more manageable and effective.

Advice for Aspiring Church Volunteers

For those considering volunteering in their church, Barbara offers heartfelt advice: “Connect with others. We were never meant to do ministry alone. Pray and ask Jesus to put His love for people in your heart.” She emphasizes the importance of continuous growth, both spiritually and in acquiring new skills. “Never stop growing, spiritually of course, but also never stop learning new things. You cannot give what you do not have.”

She also encourages maintaining a sense of wonder and carving out time for reflection. “Don’t lose your sense of wonder. Thinking time is where good ideas come from. Successful people spend time thinking.”

The Beauty of Small Church Community

Barbara deeply appreciates the unique sense of community that small churches offer. “Small churches offer members the beauty of community that one can only experience in small church settings. It truly is a lovely thing to be seen, known, accepted, loved, and missed.”

Her passion for nurturing and uplifting the women in her church has left an indelible mark, and her recognition as an outstanding ministry volunteer is well deserved. Through her work, Barbara Atchinson has shown that ministry is not about grand gestures but about consistent, heartfelt connections that bring people closer to God and to one another.

Barbara’s journey is a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and love. As she continues to lead with compassion and wisdom, her impact will undoubtedly resonate for generations to come.
